Teenager Ryan Houston was named as regional winner for the vinspired National Awards in the Bringing Communities Together category.
The annual awards are the largest of their kind, celebrating the achievements and dedication of young volunteers.
Ryan, 18, from South Shields, first applied for a voluntary post at a radio station when he was fifteen. The radio station was a LGBT format. He is now a volunteer presenter with Pride Radio in Newcastle. This proved to be somewhat of a vocation for Ryan and led him into further voluntary work. He is a keen fundraiser and has in the past volunteered at fundraising events for various causes.
He told the Shields Gazette: “As a volunteer, I know that I am helping a huge number of people.
“We are the only LGBT radio station in the North East, therefore we are voicing the views of a particular community. It is a huge responsibility, but I thrive on it.”
