Parading the Best of British at Manchester Pride

As the nation prepares for tonight’s BRIT Awards, the organisers of Manchester Pride are pleased to announce a ‘Best of British’ theme for the 2011 parade, which takes place on Saturday, 27 August.

The theme has been selected from hundreds of suggestions made in a recent poll on the Manchester Pride website.

Organisers are encouraging parade participants to think outside the box and be as creative as possible bearing in mind the diversity of British society and culture.

From fashion (Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen) and sport (Louis Hamilton, David Beckham, Amir Khan), to music (The Beatles, The Spice Girls, Queen) and film (Charlie Chaplin, Harry Potter) there is a wealth of ideas to choose from, and a number of different ways in which to celebrate British culture.

Last year saw entries from the likes of Manchester Airport and Coronation Street (Britain’s longest running soap) who took part as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations.

A spokesperson from Coronation Street, said: “The cast and crew had a brilliant time taking part in last year’s Manchester Pride Parade. We had a great reception from the crowd and it was a fantastic addition to our 50th Anniversary celebrations; we were really proud to be asked to be a part of it. As one of the ‘old timers’ we now can’t wait for the youngster that is Pride’s 21st birthday – we have no doubt it will be a fantastic celebration”.

Jackie Crozier, festival director of Manchester Pride, said: “As the country prepares for the Royal wedding, we couldn’t think of a more fitting theme than ‘Best of British’. We can’t wait to see how the theme is interpreted by others. We’d like to make this year’s parade, which marks our 21st birthday, the best it’s ever been whilst raising large amounts of money for local charities and HIV causes.”

Parade applications will open in the next coming months.
