Irish group Boyzone has become the first boyband to feature a gay couple in their video. Member Stephen Gately, who came out in 1999, has been paired with a male actor for their video “Better.”
The other four members – Ronan Keating, Mikey Graham, Keith Duffy, and Shane Lynch – have all been paired with women actors for the ballad’s video.
Gately explains to Newsbeat why he opted to be partnered with a man in the video, “I came out in 1999 and it was a big issue at the time and I don’t think I could have done this video without having a guy in the video.”
“I think it’s important for me to be true to myself.”
“The lads were saying, ‘You’ve got to do this.’ They were pushing saying, ‘This would be fantastic.’ It’s the first of its kind. That’s why I went for it.”
The recently re-formed group originally planned for their own real partners in the video but none of them would appear in it. They finally decided to employ actors after mulling over the possibility of getting celebrities.
Boyzone was put together by “X-Factor” judge Louis Walsh in 1993 and disbanded in 2000. They reunited in 2007.
